So, a little discussion about what we do and do no accept as canon is in order.
I've decided I do want to start off following the end of season two. So everything from the return of NMM to the defeat of Chrysalis is canon. However we should hold ourselves free to tweak canon as we deem it necessary. As for what comes later, that can serve as inspiration but we will not regard it as canon at all. If we do decide, for instance, that we want Ahuizotl to be a real being, that will be because it is board canon, not show canon.
What's more important to me however is to say that the only the show shall be regarded as canon. Not Equestria Girls, not the storybooks, and definitely not the comics.
I repeat.
The comics are not canon[/u].
Why so vehement? Because I won't be on a forum where NMM is anything other than adult Luna was a few cosmetic differences. I detest storylines where it turns out the villain was possessed, brainwashed, or otherwise not responsible for her actions.
Plus I don't particularly care for anythign else I've read about the comics. The same goes for Equestria Girls too. Bad enough that it makes humanised ponies a Hasbro-endorsed thing; but the implications are disturbing. There's a human counterpart to every pony at Canterlot High; so where are the human versions of Sunset and Twilight? Were they blotted out of existence when the named ponies crossed dimensions?
Then there' another reason not to include these things. People can be fans of the show without ever hearing about them. That would have been more case for a long time had Empathy not pointed the comics out to me.
